Social workers pride themselves on not seeking out the limelight and seeing their work as no extraordinary act, however today, March 20th, we get to all take a moment and celebrate the members of our society who work tirelessly to help the vulnerable, abused or exploited. On World Social Work Day, we at One Stop Social tip our hats to practitioners across the UK and encourage our community to recognise the vital work they do to support the whole country.

Social work can mean many things, from helping children in the foster care system to working with the military; which allows practitioners to specialise in different areas but also piles on the pressure. There are so many segments of society that need a support system that currently mean social workers are worked off their feet and many people in need are slipping through the cracks. With insufficient funding and a lack of recruitment, it can be easy to feel disheartened, but social workers have an inspirational level of pride in the work they do and the service they provide. Social work deals with situations where emotions are heightened and some form of personal, family or community crisis; and the UK practitioners handle it all with outstanding professionalism and care.

Social work is often misinterpreted for the extreme TV portrayals we get, where practitioners are portrayed as modern-day child catchers; whereas the reality is that these are normal people who chose to enter a profession where they spend their days helping abuse victims, political lobbying for government help and supporting families going through a trauma. One day at a time they work to make our society safer, happier and better for all.

Our team would like to raise the profile of social workers today and publicly thank them on World Social Work Day for the way they work in the shadows and help countless people to have as close to a normal life as possible. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are so grateful.
