Critical Reflections on Mental Distress, Diagnosis and Interventions

Thursday 22 March 2018 (9.30am – 4pm)

UCLan Preston Campus Venue (Lancashire)

£60 per delegate*

Brief summary:

This 1 day seminar aims to develop and broaden an understanding of the ways in which mental distress affects people, and how to intervene.  Psychiatric diagnoses (Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Depression and Anxiety) will be explored. The session also addresses the signs and symptoms from a traditional biomedical perspective but draws on social and psychological perspectives to develop a broader understanding of this.  The session then looks at different types of interventions (including Cognitive Behavioural and Mindfulness-based interventions and Wellbeing more generally).

At the end of this event participants will be able to:

  • Understand psychiatric diagnosis
  • Critically explore the idea of mental distress
  • Understand how mental health interventions ‘fit’ with our interpretations of distress
  • Understand multi-professional contexts and roles in mental health services.

This seminar does not include an assessment. On completion, participants will be provided with a certificate of attendance which will include the CPD hours achieved. The day also forms part of the Understanding Mental Health Practice SW4713 Module teaching.
