UCLan Preston Campus Venue (Lancashire)

Brief summary:

This 1 day seminar will provide an overview of the nature of mental health law and policy – its origins in psychiatry, and the nature and ethics of social policy and statute.  The ‘care versus coercion’ dilemma will also be addressed, and the practical understanding and application of principles of Recovery and Wellbeing will be explored.  In the afternoon, there is an introduction to the basic provisions of the Mental Health Act and the role of the Approved Mental Health Professional.

At the end of this event participants will be able to:

  • Critically reflect on mental health legislation and policy
  • Understand the differing values and ethics in relation to assessment and compulsory detention
  • Understanding the background to multi-professional contexts and roles in mental health services.

This seminar does not include an assessment. On completion, participants will be provided with a certificate of attendance which will include the CPD hours achieved. The day also forms part of the Understanding Mental Health Practice SW4713 Module teaching.
